Ushing has a number of different aspects, and is important in several ways. Most importantly, an Usher is concerned with people. He or she is a newcomer's first contact with our parish community; a welcoming and familiar face to everyone; someone to turn to if special help is required.

An Usher directs the traffic within the Church and collects the offerings.
At the end of the Mass, mostly unnoticed, an Usher helps keep the Church tidy by doing a quick walkabout and picking up obvious litter and any items left behind. Most importantly, an Usher is concerned with people. He or she is a newcomer's first contact with our parish community; a welcoming and familiar face to everone; someone to turn to if special help is required (for example, if someone requires Communion to be brought to them because of mobility problems); someone who helps if a member of the congregation is taken ill. Ushing is a fulfilling way to help if you wish to be active in the parish community but have little time to offer; come to your usual Mass two minutes early to check that things are in place, take another two minutes at the end for a quick tidy of your section, and attend a meeting once a year to discuss how to keep the Mass flowing smoothly. |
